Libyan leader could face prosecution for bombing of French airliner

WebPosted Fri Oct 20 08:33:03 2000
PARIS - Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi can't hide behind his title to avoid prosecution in a terrorist bombing.

A French court ruled Friday that Gadhafi can be tried in France for the bombing of an airliner over Niger in 1989. The attack killed 170 people.

The defence in the case has argued that Gadhafi, as a serving head of state, enjoys immunity from prosecution. The court rejected that claim.

Six Libyans, including a brother-in-law of Gadhafi, were in 1999 sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for the bombing of the DC-10.

International arrest warrants have been issued for their arrests.

Relatives of the bombing's victims began legal action against the Libyan leader to try to hold him responsible

Aeroboero,

of course you're right, but still, it will put pressure on him and maybe he will think twice before ordering a terrorist act again... And no, I will not go there , thanks, I always try to avoid this airspace if possible...
