BRITISH AIRWAYS SAY THANKS, BUT NO THANKS ON SUPER JUMBO...

In what could be a big blow to Airbus' Super Jumbo program, British
Airways has announced that it is not interested in the double-decker
A380 after all. Dick Wyatt, head of fleet planning for British
Airways, said the decision had been reached after the company
researched and studied the aircraft during the past several months.
Wyatt added that the jumbo jet did not make economic sense for the
British Airways fleet. "There are few routes that suit large aircraft
and we believe markets will continue to fragment," he said.

Airbus Introduces New Jet

Airbus Industrie rolled out its new A340-600 last week at the company's headquarters in Toulouse, France. Airbus hails the new aircraft as its "longest and largest airliner yet." The new airliner is expected to begin commercial flights in 2002. The A340-600 will have a passenger capacity of 380 divided in three classes and the ability to cruise 8,630 miles nonstop. Airbus says that the new jet will be the largest four-engine wide body in its fleet. The A340-600 is the newest segment of Airbus' arsenal to battle Boeing in the long-haul market. The Boeing 777-200 still leads Airbus in range (10,195 miles) but with a smaller 305 passenger load. The aircraft is expected to make its inaugural flight in late April and will be delivered to its first client, Virgin Atlantic, in June 2002. Oh, just in case you are in the market for one, the price tag for the A340-600 is $174 million. Visa and MasterCard are not accepted.
