My name is Thomas, I have the following question to pilots; During my career advice interview, I told I would love to be a pilot, but without telling me why, they told me I would not succeed. Are there pilots flying now, who had the same experience, or should I just listen to these career advisers?

Thomas,
If someone tells you something as important as what career path you should or shouldn't follow, without telling you why, then their advice is worth in my opinion, nothing.
If you want to be a professional pilot, then find out what's involved. This BBS is a good place to start, and also read the many postings in the Wannabe forum of www.pprune.org (http://www.pprune.org)

Sounds familiar but what do they know ?
It takes time, money and a lot of motivation.
If you have (or can find) those, than don't let anybody tell you you can't.
Good luck !

I totally agree with Traveler, if you think you can do it, go for it. It's worth trying, and one teacher or career-advisor won't change your dream.
I had a teacher once, that was also a career-advisor. He told me I would never become a pilot, and actually made fun of me in front of the rest of the class. I decided not to listen to him, and my dream came true, I became a pilot. Although not flying right now, I'm on a waiting-list with the gaurantee that I'll get a position at a mayor airline here in the Netherlands. The waiting could take some time, but I'm willing to wait. At least I proved my career-advisor he was wrong.

I had the exact same experience, interesting, maybe we're from the same school. I think though, once I made up my mind, it made me even more motivated. That presumptuous jerk, who does he think he is. He didn't know the first thing about the business. Guess I showed him !

The word careers advisor is the modified germanic translation for......
"One who knows nothing and talks out of his/her rectal orifice"
Now you decide whether you should listen to some deranged half wit who can't find a decent job but thinks he/she can advise others on how to.
If you want to give up the bottle....who do you talk to, a muslim? who's never touched a drop
If you want to give up womanising, who you gonna talk to, some virgin priest?
If you wanna descent job, who you gonna talk to, a career advisor who has a crap job?

If I had ever listen to carrer advisors I wouldn't be a pilot either. For some time in my past I tried IT.......well I discover that , despite the facility I had with the stuff , it wasn't near close to what I always had in my mind , that was flying. So I moved to a less sterssful career ( http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/shocked.gif ) as pilot....(believe it or not http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/tongue.gif)

Dear Thomas,
Jbravo says, <I had a teacher once, that was also a career-advisor. He told me I would never become a pilot, and actually made fun of me in front of the rest of the class.>
That the exactly the same experience I had back in 1967. I am now a Captain flying B737's for a major British airline.
If it is your dream don't be put off by negative attitudes. It takes hard work and a lot of determination, but go on prove them wrong.

Hey Thomas, My guidance counselor literally told me that I couldn't do it.
So here what I did. I went to college got my degree and licenses. Became an instructor and taught. Went on to flying jobs and different jets and 2 airlines. All from scratch, I had no previous experience and did not have a family in aviation.
Go out there an make your dream a reality.
I'll tell ya two things:
1. It is going to be hard!
2. It is so very worth it once your "there"!!
