Hi everyone!
Just wanted to say that I teach English at Airbus in Hamburg, Germany and in one hangar they now have a mock up of the back part of the new A380. They are doing emergency chute testing (if that's what it's called !?!?!)

At first I thought it was small, but recently I went up alongside it (it's on the way to the canteen!) and Oh My God. It's going to be a big baby.
Also saw the seating plans today. Very impressive.
It will have an elevator inside.

Just thought I'd tell you that. images/icons/smile.gif

I suspect the A380 will look revolutionary on the outside, but that inside, economy passengers will be subjected to "Cattle Car Class"; the term 'Airways' magazine uses in it's November 2002 issue to describe the economy section of Virgin Atlantic's brand new A340-600. 'Airways' goes on to say "...the thought of spending 12 hours in one of Virgin's 233 Economy Class seats is infinitely more frightening than the prospect of root canal work by a drunken dentist. Virgin claims that its Y-class seat pitch averages a measly 31in (79cm), and to make matters worse the IFE box takes up a full one-third of the foot space beneath every third seat in each row. The sharp corners of this metal box cut so deeply into this editor's legs that the ten-minute flight to Farnborough was awful; three hours later, the marks and bruise were still there. It chills the blood to contemplate sitting in economy on a flight to Hong Kong."

If a premier carrier like Virgin is so indifferent to the comfort of it's economy passengers, imagine the seating 'lesser airlines' will select when the A380 comes along!

While we've all seen mock-ups of the luxurious First and Business Class offerings aboard the A380, the reality is that for every pampered CEO sleeping stretched-out in comfort, further aft hundreds of poor slobs (like you and me) will be silently suffering through the night...

Not if you don't fly it....just say no , as the ads always tell us here in the USA. I don't think Virgin will go to an all 380 fleet anytime soon, you'll be able to book yourself on a more "comfortable" chair, or even fly someone else? I'd like to explore the idea of crew parties on these things. What will there be? 35 crewmembers per flight? something like that? can you imagine the layovers? "hey gang? wanna go out to dinner tonight? let's book a resturant for ourselves, or better yet let's join up the the other 380 crew here in our hotel and all go see a movie!" Holy cow! That's going to be some layovers! Some can't wait I bet! Just my 2 cents worth.
Aloha!

I think more and more former passengers are just saying no. My partner is a travel counselor and tells me that clients are asking for trips that don't involve flying, because "it's a hassle" and "it's too uncomfortable". The airlines have turned coach/economy into a real endurance test. Northwest is touting our new 757-300's which are HORRIFIC in the back - for passengers and flight attendants alike. And for most people the atmospheric prices for business and first class are not an option. I've enjoyed being a flight attendant for almost 30 years, but these days I rarely have fun on my flights because the passengers are miserable. But management doesn't seem to get it. Our CEO still talks about us running "a great airline" while we pack passengers in like sardines and starve them from one coast to the other... The A380, I'm afraid, will just be more of the same, on a larger scale.

i think the A380, at best, will get use on cheap seat cities. pack 'em in, move 'em out...get 'em back in. most of the industry is moving to smaller regional jets. regional being 900 mile range..lord. the 757-300 is a nightmare to work, trust me! someone needs to make these "aircraft specialists" get off a PC and sit a good 2, 5, 10 hour flight...let alone work inside!

Hi Mystere
I have a couple of suggestions re ops. regarding catering the flt. + cleaning.
Why not use 2 trucks - 1st. truck left side at back for lower deck, 2nd truck right side rear for upper deck.

I think you may need 2 cleaning crews. One crew for each deck.

Regards to flying it - Is the cockpit about the same height as a 747??

Oh me! Oh my! I'm glad I'm not a pilot. :smirk:

OOOOOOhhhhhhhhh I dunno about y'all, but that piece sticking down between the main gear assemblies has me worried... I mean wouldn't that be a bitch to land???? And talk about excess drag being created!!!!!!

And before ANYONE takes me seriously, note my tongue is FIRMLY planted in my cheek.

On the serious side, she's a beaut but would be a monster to service... definitely one to attack with catering and cleaning from both sides, both ends and both levels!

Hi Sugarpuffs,

Als antwoord op:<hr />

small problem here, most catering trucks won't go high enough to reach the upperdeck. :smirk:

Hi Buikie
Yep thought of that, maybe a crane is needed.
Or better still have they/or are they gonig to have internal lifts?
Failing any of the above how about double decker catering trucks? :smirk:
Help everyone I'm running out of ideas...
Needs thinking about....
I'm off to sleep, huh more like dream 380 ops problems..
I hope not nightmares though...
Sweet dreams all, nite, nite.

Double-decker catering trucks?!??!
Oh please NNOOO.

Sorry everybody for that really daft idea.

Don’t you think they would solve the current catering truck height by installing trolley lifts inside this aircraft ?
That seems easier to me, that way they can use all the “old” airports.

And of course the A380 according to Airbus, in house colours.

Imagine going into some of the more crowded airports and say 3 A380's arrive at similar times imagine going through customs .. Or even waiting for the bags ..There are so many problems with these big planes that its going to cause havoc at some airports.. Whats next the A400 tripple decker 1500pax flying AKL-LHR 22 hours non stop yukkkkkkk

The crowds come out in the middle of the night in France, to see the first A380 fuselage on its way to the assembly plant.
