I have some personal favorites, and hope that with the 'new BA' uniform due 2002, maybe they can draw some inspiration from our colleagues around the globe.
Amongst the Best : Air France, ANA, Cathy, Virgin, Alitalia
The Worst : British Airways, Air2000(uk), Austrian Airlines, American Airlines, KLM.

This is a personal opinion, and would like to hear what you think...

I work for Virgin Express and yes in 4 years time we had 4 different uniforms... we started in the joyful colours of red/white/gray... polo and trousers, then we got a classical shirt, black trousers, and then a typical suit, with a red tie, and the new uniform will be out soon....

You should see my wardrobe...it's nearly a museum of uniforms...

I like the uniforms of Virgin Atlantic and Citybird very much.

Today I saw some people wearing the new uniform... it s very sober... http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif But they are doing try-outs...that's great...

At United we are slated to get new unis by 2002 (sooner maybe if the merger happens). But I continue to hear that our new duds will be teal in color...to match the new look that I have already seen on some of our interiors.

We have heard so many rumors at Northwest Airlines about new uniforms coming out but we still haven't heard anything concrete. I guess the big wigs are waiting to see what happens with all the proposed mergers/acquisitions. It was rumored that we were going to get new uniforms as well as KLM flight attendants so that our two airlines have very similar styles. That probably no longer applies, depending on BA/KLM deal.
I do know this, the men's uniform is really sharp...

United is getting new uni's in Jan. of 2002. However, the colors are charcoal grey and medium blue, not teal. The design is said to be "very contemporary and classic"...hmmm, we'll see!

I donīt think that Austrian Airlines is THAT bad... the only thing really bothering me about it is the red hose... WHO came up with that? I would say the worst uniforms I`ve seen are BA.

The uniform worn by Monarch Airlines is one of the most beautiful ones and looks so smart!

what about the worst airlines uniforms? at British Midland the crew used to wear this horrible red and grey uniform! we all feeled ashamed to wear it! BMA even noticed a decrease in complaints from pax after introducing the new uniform! I can't believe that there could worse than that red and grey fancy dress!

I think that KLM does not have very attractive uniforms. The cut and style is very appropriate but the powder blue color is not flattering on anyone. A friend of mine worked for old Pan Am and told me that Hollywood costume designer Edith Head designed the uniforms that they wore in the 1970s. Now, that's class!

**DONOTDELETE**
September 11, 2000, 04:30 PM
just shows that it is all a matter of taste...I find the KLM uniform quite smart and different from the other boring ones..not so sure about the 70's style!....

September 13, 2000, 02:48 AM
Need to clarify something in my last message. Edith Head designed the uniforms for old Pan Am in the 1970s, not KLM.

Sorry for the confusion! http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/shocked.gif

I'm sorry, I've never heard of Mrs. Head. (that sounds a little .. never mind). But the current KLM uniform is designed by Nina Ricci, so a name is not necessarily saying much. Than again, what do I know ? I think KLM's color is a good choice but the cut and style sucks. Alitalia knows how to cut and style but their colors are dreadful. It's not easy to please everybody or every body.

Saw a copy of Delta Airlines' employee magazine. Their new uniforms were pictured. I believe they will start wearing them in January 2001. They look great. Looks like something from Brooks Brothers or Harold's, Teal blue blouse and and grey jacket, pants and skirt. Don't know what they men's uniforms look like.

Has anyone else seen the new Delta uniforms? http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Hey Flying Chick!

My best recollection from that article is that Delta will have a gray jacket, trousers and skirt and a teal blue blouse. I think that the jacket looks like something you would buy at Brooks Brothers or see on television's "Allie McBeal." The jacket is a styled in the unconstructured mode with three or four buttons. It does not look like a uniform. It looks like a business suit. I hope that it is not three or four buttons for it will date that style quick.

Talk to you soon. Fly safe! http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/cool.gif

The original rumor at United was teal. That has been squashed. I have seen some of our aircraft though with teal interiors. I like the new interiors in that it looks more roomy and airy. Except the carpeting looks like it is messy.

I guess now we are going to have charcoal colored uniforms. That seems to be more then rumor. It also sounds a lot like Deltas new diggs. I guess we just wait and see what we are wearing in 2 years.

Nothing, but nothing is worse than the old Qantas uniform. We used to look like a Bavarian marching band!
In our crew hotels other guests often thought I was the lift operator!
It was "the blue of the Australian sky and the red of the earth". What a load of c--p!
It was electric blue with terracotta cuffs and gold trim. It looked ridiculous.

It was a relief to get our current uniform (now 6 years old) and I think most crew are still happy with it.
Some genius on the ground though keeps coming up with ideas to make us even hotter in the cabin like wearing jackets (instead of vests) all the time in First and Business.

I remember being at HKG airport waiting to get on our aircraft and an Air France crew walked past and laughed at us (mind you, I think their uniform is pretty boring).
It was an Yves St Laurent design.

I feel sorry for the Singapore girls when I see them in FRA in Winter in those strappy little sandals.
And as for Austrian, what were they thinking?!

I was told at a Purser meeting that the new United uniforms were very contempoary. Not double breasted, Charcoal Grey with the Blouse being a FRENCH Blue! what ever that is. There will be a dress for the ladies and that is all they said. From the sound of what Delta proposes it does sound like UAL and Delta may have gotten a deal on the Material at the same manufacture.

I haven't seen a uniform I really like. Ours (NWA) are not bad; I don't like the women's dresses and it would be nice if the men had a vest as an option. I also know that the women don't like the blouse; one has to order one two sizes too big to get the neck to fit properly. If the button is undone, you risk retaliation from your manager! I understand that we're going to get new uniforms in royal blue!!! Give me a break! I hope to God it's just a rumor.

I'll be the black sheep as usual: I like BA uniforms. They look pretty confortable to work in. Having worked for years in the most unconfortable uniform in the history of civil aviation, I regard at the confort as the main thing. Ok, you won't look like a top model on it, but you don't have to, right?
I don't like Monarch: the style definitely out of fashion, and the dreadful colors.
Lauda air: can you imagine working in a tight jean? Maybe heading to Jamaica? Whith a red baseball cap on your head?

Latest word at Delta is we're going to start receiving our new uniform pieces in November and begin wearing them in mid-January. All employees completed uniform fittings in September. The original was indeed charcoal grey with royal blue shirts. Men had the option of wearing a tie. But some people complained that it would be unprofessional for men not to wear a tie at all. And most people -- especially those of us based in Florida -- shudder at the thought of wearing blue shirts during the summer months. We'll all look like blue hot towels.

Rumor is....UAL will have the same colors as those Delta Uniforms.(Grey and blue). I have not seen a prototype yet. Looking at the photo that someone else created a link to, (for the Delta Uniforms) I think maybe I prefer the traditional Navy/white. But, I do like the idea of an open-necked shirt. (it can still look neat but be more comfortable. It's always so hot with all those buttons and bows. Plus, it *is* the 2000s.)

OK so were all seeing changes in uniforms. My question is this - When on this green earth are they going to make the uniforms nonflammable? The seatcushions, galley curtains and the like are made from flame resistant material but nylon stockings and polyester will melt to your skin in extreme heat. Thats the improvement that needs to be made.

suthernbelle
December 16, 2000, 09:49 PM
Lisa, boy! Did you hit the nail on the head! That's what I have been wondering about for years. The airlines put us in some unnatural fibers such as polyester which melts. We would be walking candles in case of a fire. If I had enough time to prepare, I would probably take my uniform off and put on the pair of jeans and gym shoes I keep in my bag.

LvMnflyboi
December 16, 2000, 11:30 PM
That is so hillarious. Ya know the airlines have rules we have to follow about emergencies, but when it comes down to it, it's our life, not theirs. So if u feel changing into jeans and a regular shirt is gonna save your life. LOL I'M ALLLLLL FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

P.S. just don't forget to put your name bar on straight and still have your hair up and ID on ;-) hahahahahahahhaaaaa

Recently, all us FAs at NWA received a letter from our illustrious president, John Dasberg, outlining new changes that will take effect when our new terminal opens in Detroit in December of 2001.

He made no mention of uniforms, but I have heard that when the new terminal opens, we will have new uniforms to be worn. I have also heard that they will be black (yea! it's slimming) with white shirts.

I also heard a while ago that KLM, Alitalia, and Continental will have the same uniforms but with different coloured stripes on the wrist of the jacket, and different coloured under flaps on the jacket lapel for women.

This of course is probably not true anymore that KLM and Alitalia broke up, and NWA doesn't own contolling shares in Continental anymore.

But wouldn't it have been really cool?

Kisses!

I think some people are forgetting the fundamental reason for even wearing uniforms to begin with.....safety
Ive seen the Air Lanka uniforms with their saris and sandals( how practical is that in an emergency?)same with singapore airlines,Ill admit they look great, but it makes me question their priorities.
My favs are
Love Gulf Air,Tyrolean,Air Plus(except for the fact that they completely change uniforms for service, from a red dress,to a purple pants suit, its really quite something to see)I really do like the colors of Air Canada.Hainan F/a's in China wear a really nice black suit with a great hat!

Hey Guys
Happy Holidays!!
I TOTALLY agree, we also wear polyester shirts and ties (scarfs for the girls)in the cabin heat none of hope to never encounter you can imagine how much this would melt on - ouch!
If they were made from natural fibres(100%) we would not only more protected but feel more comfortable when working in the cabin as this fabric breaths. I can think of dozens more reasons why we should have the right to wear this textile, but like everything now, it comes down to the dollar. Look at how much the airline insures us for if we are killed or hurt in the line duty - stuff all!
Yet they want us to perform and bring the punters back. It's kinda insulting sometimes aint it?
(had to get that out it's been bugging me forever! Plus I've just got home from work and am probably a little hypoxic!!! - Ah Hypoxia ~ a hosties best sedative!!)
On a lighter note if you can get a copy of December 'Airways Magazine' an article aboout Shanghai Airlines shows there current unform, while it is very Vogue, it is vogue of the 30's-40's they should have a picture of a DC3, DC6 or a super connie in the background - not a fleet of 767's!!
Well all the best to you all for the year 2001 and have a real blast on New Years Eve, where ever you may be.
Cheers Jet XXXX

I will continue the thread and announce that we are also introducing a new uniform around 2002 for the female cabin attendants.
Us male cabin attendants will have to wait 2003 to see a change in our wardrobe.
We will get a new uniform at the same time as our cabins will change to new decors and seats.

Swissair is planning to have new Uniforms in 2002 too. However we will have a basic uniform (skirts, jackets, pants)for diffrent airlines(Swissair,Balair,AOM,Air Liberte,Air Littoral and possibly all the other Qualiflyergroup airlines, in which swissair holds stocks....),every airline can choose for their accessoires, like blouses,scarfs,ties..)

Personally, I think that every flight attendant should be somewhat unique. Allow me to explain.

Lets say an airline has three different uniform options, and a f/a is allowed to mix and match.

For Men:
-Navy Pants
-White Shirt
-Navy Vest & Jacket

-Gray slacks/jacket
-Dark Blue Shirt

-Navy pants
-Navy sweater covering white shirt and tie (this gives a more relaxed look).

For Women:
-Traditional Dress outfit

-White Shirt/Navy pants and coat

-Gray pants/jacket and a dark blue shirt with a red color scarf

-Navy pants, and a navy short sleaved sweater type shirt

Also, I think that on mainline domestic flights, crews should be allowed to wear polo shirts with the company name embrotered into it.

NWA will indroduce new uniforms in Jan.2002 designed by NONE other than Mr. Armani. They will be Blue...between navy and light blue. I have heard from the uniform folks that the common them throughout the Alliance is STILL a go.

I'd like to see that... No doubt I would enjoy something smart... and colourful.
As a matter of fact, ours looks a bit dull. Despite our blue T-shirts and shawls, I don't really enjoy the kind of gray "couleur de douanier Suisse" that we actually have to wear. Though classical and designed by Olivier STRELLI (famous Belgian Haute Couture), it's a little too dark in my opinion.
Do you have more details about this new Swissair style?

January 30, 2001, 04:02 AM
I've always liked Blue as the main color of my uniforms! I have seen and experienced wearing uniforms that were so unairline like! There was a posting from a QF crewmember saying that they looked like a Bavarian Marching Band and I have experienced that too! There is nothing like BLUE like the sky! Blue has always been a tradition for the airlines I believe as much as Black will go well with the sea going people! What do you all think?

This is for UAL FAs ...

How true is this rumour that we no longer be getting our new duds due to some budget cuts. I guess after studying everything well, cutting some of our services in the air isn't a wise move and so they decided to put our new uniform on hold ... indefinitely. Which for me is COOL ... I keep my Dress Blue duds! How do you all feel?

Mikey ... I love the ANZ unis! Their color scheme/combination is my favorite! Now Qantas is another story ... someone on another Board has described their unis as almost like a Bavarian Marching Band. I used to remember their colors before when it was orange and blue combi. Have they changed? ANZ is a great airline to work for and I have had the pleasure of being a passenger with them several times. A few times when I used to work for another carrier down the South Pacific way.

I love the way the speak too! A funny way, but nice (just kidding). I assume that you are a Kiwi, Mikey? ANZ being part of our Star Alliance ... you will be able to ID95 on us ... make a comparison. I will not make any comments though ... take care and good luck, Mate.

I have to say our uniform in Gulf Air has improved immenseley. We used to have this horrible peach colour blouse and light gray skirt and jacket, the dress was a horrible light gray stripy thing, highly flammable. Now they've smartened us up with navy, dark gray and peach, but the peach is not so luminous. Not forgetting the 'nice' hat - but the colour is better and it all looks very smart. Designed by Pierre Balmain - apparently. Quality leaves a lot to be desired though and we still look like genies... http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I like the BA uniform that weird patterny shirt with a navy blue skirt or a long dress in the same pattern with a navy blue blazer and a long coat and scarf in the winter. For service a navy blue waistcoat is worn. Now hats only have to be worn on Concorde(rumour from one of my BA friends is that Concorde will be flying in less than 7 weeks!) As the uniform is being re-vamped next year, women will be able to wear trousers.

I like the Virgin Atlantic uniform-a red skirt suit(for women!) and black gloves and a purple neck scarf. The in-flight supervisers wear a black blouse instead of a white one and a different scarf.

Not keen on the old British Midland uniform-long patterned dress, jacket and hat but now they are bmi they are going to change the uniforms.

Don't like Easyjet-bright orange shirts and black trousers or skirts.

people think they're very garish. the bright orange top with black waistcoat and black trousers or skirt.
i like all the Virgin uniforms. atlantic's is very nice and a lot better than the old ones that looked like one of those cinema attendants. Express' is very nice. it is very professional and chic and Blue's is casual and the suede and red goes well.
the bmi british midlands, which is the same deign as ours at EZY but not in garish orange but shades of blue.

The Thai girls who work international routes always look very smart, and the Icelandair girls always look very professional also. Love the hats!

The Air Plus Comet uniforms are very nice. You can see different pictures of this uniform on their website.

Click on "Air Plus Comet", click on "servicio ā bordo" . Once you click on the small picture of two stewardesses on the right side you will see the different pictures of their beautiful uniforms!!!!

Let me know what you think of it.
