What's your favourite aircraft to work in?
Mine is 747-400, but the other types I fly are 747-300/md-11/767-300 so that's quite obvious. Tell me!

Almost any New Generation BOEING aircraft gets my vote: 777-200, 737-700/800. Can't wait to see our new 767-400's. I got here just as they phased out the DC-9 and 727, can't wait til they get rid of our MD-80s.

Airbus 320 with their wide aisles (for healthy-sized FAs like me) and the DC10 for it is an easy AC to work.

Hmmm…everyone seems to prefer the wide-bodied aircraft. Well, one of my favorites is the F-100.

I’ll pause here to give you time to stop laughing.

I like it because it’s a cozy little airplane and even when it’s wa-a-ay overbooked, you know you can’t get more than 85 pax. PLUS, it’s less likely to have meal services scheduled.

OK…you can start laughing again. http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I like all aircrafts with overhead ( or lower) crew rests for flight attendants as well, so not only for the cockpit crew ( like KLM's MD-11) http://smilecwm.tripod.com/sm/newbie.gif

Welcome Aborad I can top you. I am still in mourning for the retirement of our 747-100. The lower lobe galleys were a great place to hide out in...Less hiding places on the newer jets, still searching for a hiding place on the 777!!

Gotta love those Scarebuses! Okay, so they're always on a Mx....but that "call reset" button on the f/a panel more than makes up for it all. Boy, who woulda' thought that somewhere, someday, an a/c manufacturer would actually allow us to turn off those damnable call lights without having to leave the comfort of our jumpseat. http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif (Did I say that????)

Personally, I'll pass on most of the newer a/c out there - can't say I care for technology, tee hee. Gimme an old Convair or the old 737-Cargo Combi's and I'm one happy camper. At least I know with these a/c that they won't break if I look at 'em crosseyed. http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

I'm also partial to that lower galley on the L-1011....hmmm....choices, choices.

Good question, though!

My vote goes to the A340.........gotta luv 'em. Don't mind the boeings.......but the Airbus is so much more crew friendly.....meaning LESS PASSENGERS!!!! Too many people on a 747-400 and everything on the 747-200 is falling apart.......give me my nice shiny airbus any day of the roster (ALL airbus flts this month....YIPPEEEEE!)

Happy Landings and hours of crew rest to you all.

Of the whole Northwest Airlines fleet, I prefer the 757. I don't mind the DC-10's either. I really don't like the DC-9's. I hate the 727. A320 is great too, with wide aisles and the comfortable seats for the paxs. But, by far, my favorite now is the 757. I fly out of San Francisco and luckily don't have to fly on the DC-9's or 727's.
We are retiring our 727's any way. I hear from fellow fa friends that the 777 is great. Northwest is making a decision on the DC-10 replacement right now. I hope they go with the 777's...Only time will tell...James

The Tristar -200, loved it! Underfloor Galley was great for a party! Really like BA's new 747-400 with our new club sleeper seats, it seems like we're moving away from the Cattle Truck atmosphere in all our cabins, and steering towards a bit of nostalgic glitz and glamour... very popular with the passengers, a much calmer ambience in all cabins.

Like James, I like the 757s as well as the A320s and DC10s. I really dislike the DC9. I don't know if it is the AC itself or the scheduling - Real long days, real short nights

Of the 757s, I like the 5500 series better than the 5600 series. The 5500 series - at least with our configuration - has a bulkhead around row 30 thus creating an aft zone. On light-load flights (oh so rare these days) the aft zone can be a dandy FA lounge. Not only does it provide a place to hide, but you are close to food, drink, lav, video, your luggage, (I usually stow mine back there) pillows, blankets, extra headsets and magazines. What more can you ask? (Now come on, within reason!)

Therefore I have to amend my answer to A320s, 757s and DC10s.

Leaving out tomorrow. Be back Wednesday. Ya'll fly safe and have fun!

DEFINITLY THE 777-200,DID THE TRAINING ON THE NEW 767 BUT HAVEN'T FLOWN IT YET,BUT WOULD IMAGINE IS VERY MUCH LIKE THE 777.
757 IS NOT BAD BUT IF YOU DON'T HAVE A COORDINATED CREW, CAN BE A LIVING HELL.

My fave at UAL would be the 777. I worked the 2 class version a couple of weeks ago DEN 2 LAX though and coach is just toooo huge. When flying the FS/purser I like the 737's. Only 8 mouths to feed. I do like the wider aisles of the A319/20 but they always have something broken. Lav, sink, screens...and I miss the Sharron Stone seat.

I can easily say I don't like the 727. When on the aft js who knows where the ground is?

My favorite position to work is the 747 400 upper deck aisle. If I am on the 200 I like to be upstairs all alone with those 16 smiling faces.

OK so I like a lot of aircraft. Call me versatile. On the planes that is.

DeltaFlyBoy
October 16, 2000, 07:59 AM
Hmmm, Delta doesn't really offer a wide variety of aircraft.. we don't
have any airbus, only boeing and Douglas. but, out of our fleet, I love
the 767-300ER and the 777-200.

I hear many ppl complimenting the 757... and I must say, I LOVE the a/c, but HATE to work it. I mean, we have wider isles on our
MD-88!

I hate the 727/737

But the aisle is a little narrow and no hot service items.
Luggage space is adequate though.
I've never gotten any complaints on that type either but
I've never worked on it as cabin crew.

I just love 737's. The 600's and above are fantastic (Not that I In fly on those - But I've seen onboard a couple, very roomy)
As for Airbus - Yuk. The old A300's were cool, the A320 is nice inside but it is too smart for its own good.
Ansett call their A320s a Skystar, known as the deathstar, flying lawnmower etc.
If it's not a Boeing then I'm not going!!

October 25, 2000, 04:02 PM
Absolutely the A-320. Wide isles, spacious aft galley. I don't like the swivel jumpseat, though. Too visible.

All the wide bodies are nice, but I like the DC-10 the best.

I'm curious, is NWA actually buying some Triple 7 aircraft? I've flown on one, and it looked lovely.

Of all planes I've worked on (737's/757/DC9/MD88/MD90) I like the 737-800 most, because of the modern interior and the ample opportunities to perform practical jokes it gives. My favorite is using the empty overwing overhead life raft stowage. We sometimes act as if it's an overhead crew rest. It lowers fwd facing and you can stand aft facing and lower it to communicate with the make-believe crew up there, for instance by offering them a leftover meal and retrieving the (previously placed) dirty trays, asking how they enjoyed their meal! Imagine those faces around you!

I can't relate to the longer aircraft, but the 757 all economy layout once gave me a nightmare in which I was walking to my demo position and I just couldn't reach it, while the purser was rattling away her demo speech.

I like to work the MD-11,thy are spacious and have large galleys, nice crewbunk.
the A330 are new and modern, but the galleys are small,no crewbunk,a lot of electronic(which is not working haha)
The A321 on shorter routes is hell, an aisle which will never end,to long....
Looking forward what the new A340-600 will bring, the longest plane ever built!!!!
i guess you will need rollerblades for service in economy

my two are 747-400 and 777-200,the 747 is great for us supervisors as we have a dedicated area where we can do our work and the crew have an area to get away on their breaks and our new club cabin makes the a/c look very spacious, the 777 is very nice but lots of problems with noise at the back of first from the club galley, allthough do other airlines have what we call high comfort seats by D1L&R D2L&R ? these are used for in flight breaks and are very uncomfortable !

At BA LGW base the oldies amongst us miss the DC10...the best crew compliment F- 3 for 12pax J-3 for 35 pax & Y-5 for 167 pax...plus larger galleys than the 747classics we were also on at the time.

Nowadays, the l/haul 767 is a dream...only 132 pax in economy with 4 crew & a ballroom of a galley & First is intimate with 2 of you for 8pax. 777 is great for pax in the cabin, but universally hated by crew due to the cramped badly designed galleys in all cabins & those "High Comfort" j/seats used for rest are a joke.

It is rumored that NWA is looking at the triple 7 to replace the DC10s. It is also rumored that the A330 is under consideration. For my money, I would bet that NWA buys the A330s. I think NWA operates the largest domestic Airbus fleet. The airbus does not cost as much as the triple 7 and we know how much money means to the company!!

The company is supposed to make a decision before the end of the year.

I like the 737-400... nice aircraft to work in and love the front loo.. you go in and because of its low roof I have often got stuck..pressing the attendant call to find the purser opening the door... good for reveiws... but it is a workable aircraft.. one in which I enjoy..

I work for NWA. Our workhorse is the DC-9. It is a completely vomitizing plane and I hate it very much.

My favorite plane to work is the 757. On light loads, the aft portion of the plane is usually empty so the FAs can have some fun.

On Thanksgiving night I worked a flight from MSP to DTW that got in very late. Of 190 seats, 15 were filled with PAX. Our crew was 4, there was a working deadhead crew of 4, 2 must deadheads, and one Add (or extra).

The aft cabin became our lounge after service (which took five minutes) and we had a little party. A pretzle bag war ensued and I wore the female scarf for the flight rather than my tie.

It was an absolute hoot! From the bulkhead and lavs at row 30 back on the 757 is FA territory!

Kisses!

I think the 747-400 is by far the most fabulous. However, in the narrow body class, I think the A320s are just dandy. Although, if you sit in the back galley for take-off and landing, they shake and shimmy a little to much.

galleys and rests depend on what the company ordered. Our 777 have average galleys but lower crew rests with bunks that are really fabulous on longhaul.

Most people think I'm nuts, but I love flying AA's 757 in coach (yes...I said coach). Even though most people hate the slave ship, I enjoy flying it, because service takes more than 10 minutes to complete...I also love the 737 in coach. The new 738s have a galley that is so user friendly.

If I have to be #1 (First Class), it has to be the Super80. Much better than the 737-800, even if they do say that the FAs designed the galleys.

I so agree with GalleyHag -- the DC9s are the pits. No place to take a break from the passengers, usually full and the rear jumpseat puts you right in the lav. There are some who love the 9. They like the short crew and the little short legs. More power to them.

The 757 is my favorite. As GalleyHag said, zone C on the 5500 series can be a flight attendant lounge. One time, I was actually deadheading (not deadhead work) to LAX. We only had 33 pax. Sitting back there with the LA-based crew was a lot of fun. I also like the 1L jumpseat on the 5500 series. At the bulkhead wall, there is a pull-down workspace. I guess I am also partial to the 757 because of the layovers. A lot of west coast flying.

Although I'm not a flight attendant yet, I do spend a lot of time in the galley.

At UA, the 737 galleys are kinda cramped, and the 727s, well think about it like this, there is only one cart on board.

From the flight attendants that I've talked to, they like the 744 because of the crew bunk at the back of the plane.

The 757 is the pits at United. Too many rows of coach. My personal favorite is the 767, I dont know what thats like for the crews.

Last week, I was at the maintence base for UA at SFO, and my friend and I went in an A320. I've got to admit that those had real nice galleys. What I dont understand is why didnt they off load the carts at the gate like they usually do. That plane had been at that base for 15 hours, and there was milk that was onbord that I think spoiled, and a 150 meal trays. While Kai and I explored, my dad sat in the back and did his cross word puzzle.

I used to work regularly on a DC-9-32 which had previously flown for CO. It had a 8C/90Y configuration with just one galley in the front. We had 3 FA's for Y and one for C-class and we used to serve hot meals from that single galley to pax in both classes. For those 90 pax in Y we had one meal cart carrying 30 1/2 size trays. It had to be reloaded twice with trays during the service and cleared out twice again while collecting trays. Looking back I can't imagine serving a hot meal + drink + drink in such an configuration on a 2 1/2 hr. flight, but we had fun, having to sit on each other's laps in between due to the lack of space. It was cozy...

Out in Australia (the forgotton Country) we have an airline called Virgin Blue (DJ) They run 737-400 aircraft (GRRRRR I like 737) anyway they are all Steirage..(sorry titanic coming out) I mean Economy..all.. and the food is purchased aposed to being dished out. By doing this the airline can offer cheaper seats.. this is giving both Ansett and Qantas a run for their money GO VIRGIN...

I started flying in 1988, and have been licenced on the DC9-15/32,737-300/400/500, ATP, Fokker50/70/100, BAe146,and currently Airbus 319/320 and 757/767.
I liked the 9`s although noisy they were better than the nightmare which replaced it. The Fokker 100.In the summer (in the uk)the cabin got very hot even in flight and one summer day in Jersey (Channel Islands) whilst on the ground the cabin reached 38C. The APU was u/s so we had ground start, but the power lead was pulled out too soon, this affects the f/d and we had to wait for 7 minutes with door closed plus paxs whilst the instruments reset themselves. Fokker 70 did not suffer the heat problem. The ATP well, you went home early as TEC a lot. 146 not bad to work on but noisy APU and flaps which paxs always asked about. plus the cabin flumes.
Looking at the present fleet I`m on. I like the Airbus 319/320, good wide ailes, 757 providing the crew are working together other wise its a nightmare. Hate the 767, too big although good size galleys, just the mid gets all the rubbish dumped it and then it comes unworkable.
Out of interst anyone else been on the F100 and found problems with air con in the cabin?

euroboy
January 6, 2001, 04:35 PM
I`ve managed to operate on a number of a/c which ranged from DC9-14/15 srs,DC9-32, ATP, 737-300/400/500, Fokker50,70,100,BAe 146,and presently 757,767,Airbus 319,320.
Galleys seat pitch is what the airline orders for that particular plane. Many of you dislike the DC9, its old, the ones I flew on were built in 1966, just 2 years younger than me. But in its day it was the best thing in the air. I worked it in single class cabin 85pax or 110 pax, hot meal service and it was ok.
What replaced the 9 was the worst plane. The Fokker 100. It lacked air conditioning to start with, and even in British summers we cooked as we flew around Europe. One particular turn round in JER the APU was u/s so we had ground start. We boarded paxs closed the door put the ground staff removed the power cable too soon which upsets the f/d instruments so we had to wait 7 minutes for these to reset themselves. During this 7 mins the cabin temp. hit 39c. During the 40 min flight the cabin temp droped to 29c.
Fokker70 did not suffer this heat problem.
ATP stood for Always Techinal Problems.
As for best a/c I think the Airbus 319/320 are comfortable to work on, refrigerated trolley stowages wide ailes.
757 are good to providing the crew work together other wise its a mess.
Has anyone else worked Fokker 100`s, did you suffer hot cabins?

I remember those old DC8s Stretch Jets! They were so nice to work on! Now, I guess it would be the A320/A319; if you're Purser, it would be less mouth to feed ... in Coach on a Transcon ... it kinda may be a nightmare especially when it would be multiple service ... lack of supplies!

I'm a Cal FA and fly domestic mainline. I love the 737 but my favorite is the 737-700 because its still small but has updated video systems and is easy to work especially if you work the aft galley. a curtain blocks off the customers from going into your galley when they use the lavs. Unlike the older 737-300's we have. Those new generation B737 must be so nice! Its really about time that Boieng got their acts together and patterned a small plane like the Guppy into something the AirBus 320/319 has in terms of FA friendliness. Being stuck on a plane lets say from ORD to SLC without any movie is inhumane for both PAXes and FAs. Wished we had those new generation B737s at UA.

Don't be sad! The A330 is a lovely aircraft to work on. Nice wide aisles, HUGE galley at the back with nice HCAS seats, loadsa toilets and best of all the downstairs crew rest area! OK it may not be as fast as the 744, but hey, less pax and slightly longer flights means more crew rest!
Music to my ears!

Talking of DC10s though, I wish JMC would retire theirs so that the damn thing would stop going tech in BGI and making us take all their pax.....hate it when that happens.

The 330 sounds like a great airplane. Yes, the Airbus Industrie ACs are very crew friendly and have all the modern conveniences. I really like working the airbuses.

But the styling of the DC10! Isn't it great. That number two engine in the tail. Classic design. The 727s are also a pretty airplane. A real distinctive look. No doubt what kind of airplane it is when you look at it.

Back to the 727s - I do not like working on them. Not real crew friendly. NWAs are old and smelly. Only have eight left. To be retired soon.

Actually, the only AC in NWA fleet that I really, really trip-dropping do not like are the DC9s. Yes, you can make some $ with short crew, but is it worth it? Noisy, small, no place to take a mental health mini vacation/break from pax. Meal service on the DC9 is...well... http://www.crewstart.com/ubb/images/icons/shocked.gif

For me it has to be the BAC 1-11! They're a bit of a rare sight these days (except in museums!)Age isn't on it's side and they'll all be grounded by the end of the year! It may be knocking on in years and be a lot older than the cabin crew that work it, but it's a sturdy little thing and nippy too.... they don't call it the "Pocket Rocket" for nothing! RIP 1-11!

I tend to agree with most people here when I say the A320 "Scarestar" is my favourite.

Our Scarestar holds a maximum of 144pax (8J/136Y) and actually has room in the galley to put stuff. Things aren't all over the place in overhead lockers or crammed into trolleys. Also most of our Scarestars have the same or similar galley configuration. This means you can actually find things!

Yes ok it's plastic fantastic and has wood panelling at the front bulkhead with a boat-style clock, but it's good to work on!

I miss the old F50 - great for me, bad for the passengers. Capacity of 46, the longest flight was 1.30hr and it had a fabulous mini-galley. The passengers had no head room, no leg room and no stowage.. it was fun!

So, which aircraft is wining this race?

Personally, I like the B747-400. We fly that easily. After 767 or A320, the 747 has to win. Galley space, upper deck (the place to work), 17 crew, bunks and pax seats reserved for crew rest, cant beat it.

Empty carts to put that extra tray that just wont fit in to the space it came from. Wonderful.!!

My complaint is 'Why don't we have a trash compactor'. I want one. I'm sick of trying to find places for the garbage bags.

I love the A319. Altough we have 16 pax in FC. We have just over a 100 in YC. Nice galley space. I don't like sitting in the back because the landings are rough on the airbus.
I like working FC on the 727 and 757. Dislike coach on these planes.
Don't like the DC10 too much, but my fav. position is meals in coach.
On the 747-400 give me business class. Much nicer calmer, spacious cabin.
I don't mind the DC9 at all, as long as a meal isn't being served. Its nice occasionally to work the aft position. Just close the bins, brief the exits, and demo. NO hello's or goodbyes. images/icons/grin.gif

Kisses!

I am a Continental Airlines International Flight Attendant. My Favorite A/C is CAL's 767-200ER. With 8 F/A's as our normal crew complement (International)its always a pleasure to fly.

Then the 737-700. With 4 F/A it is so easy to work.

This is the way I would organize my favorites at Continental;

1.) 767-200ER (25/149)-8 F/A's (Int)
2.) 737-700 (12/112)-4 F/A's (Int)
3.) 737-500 (12/94)- 4 F/A's (Int)
4.) 767-400ER (35/200)11 F/A's (Int)
5.) 777-200ER (48/235)12-15 (11 MIN)
6.) 757-200ER (16/156)-6 F/A's (Int)
7.) 757-200 (24/159)-6 F/A's (Int)
8.) 737-900 (18/149)-5 F/A's (Int)
9.) 737-800 (14/141)-4 F/A's (Int)
I dislike the following;
737-800 (18/132) 4 F/A's (Int)
737-300 (12/112) 4 F/A's (Int)
757-300 (24/183) 6 F/A's (Int)
MD-80(81,82,83) (14/127)-4 F/A's (Int)
DC10-30 Both Atlantic and Pacific configurations (38/204 DC10A)(28/254 DC10P)
11 F/A's Int for DC10A
10 F/A's Int for DC10P
9 F/A's for DC10P Hawaii FLTS.

I like to work A/C where the F/A complement is distributed in a way to reflect an easy
environment. Our planes are almost always full. The more F/A's the faster and easier our job is. images/icons/wink.gif Happiness to all.

Did anyone mention the 767-200?. From my viewpoint it's by far the best new generation. Have only done short transatlantic flights but am waiting for new routes to see how it is longhaul. For somewhat older a/c I liked DC9-10 (nothing beats serving precooked hot meals in styrafoam.) B737-100 were nice because you could get the passengers off really fast out the back door. Always enjoyed upper deck 747-200 (I was too junior but could hold it because I didn't mind hauling 2nd service supplies up spiral staircase like a beast of burden). Talk about hiding placing. We lost a flight attendant and couldn't find him when we landed in New Zealand.

MANGOS I am curious. Can you please list the items that you (or UAL has mentioned during training) find that make the Airbus A-319/320 such a F/A friendly A/C. Besides the built-in handrail's in the Over Head Bins and the larger (2 inches) Aisle?

Thanks and happiness to all...

The A321 is by far an awesome a/c to work on. Like the 319/320's, you have tons of space to get the job done. I especially like the indented galley space AFT of the 1R door. Room to breath those pre-set trays on a long haul images/icons/smile.gif

If you dont mind, may I have a stab at this question. I know that its directed to Mangos, but I'd like to add my input. While im not yet a flight attendant, I want to be. I spend a lot of time in the galley of the planes, and I have grown up in the United family, as my dad works for them.

United's 737s suck compared to the 737NG. I got the chance to fly on a Delta 738, and it was nice. Much like our airbusses at United. What makes the A319 and the A320 more desirable for the crew is the fact that the galleys are larger, meal preperation is easier, you have standard sized carts (on UA's 737s we have fewer carts but larger ones. A human could stowaway in one of those carts). With the larger aisle, and more overhead bin space, the A320 family is definatly loved by most of our passengers. The addtion of video makes a long voyage seem short.

One thing that I really like on the Airbus is that there is interphone caller-id. You know exactly who is calling you, or when the pa is on, or what ever.

I'll think of somemore reasons.
