Hi i am 15 years old and wanting to be a flight attendant when i am older. I am just wondering what school subjects i should Take for Year 11. I have all ready determined i am taking Korean as a language option. I am wondering what you people took when you were in school? Also how far did you go through school?? When did you leave??
My friend and i are wondering what it is like to be a flight attendant as all we can find is forums that only tell us the requirements and benefits. I want to talk to a flight attendant who knows it first hand. Tell me everything please.

Languages: Spanish, German, French. Korean doesn't seem much useful.
The main thing/tool for F/A is teamwork.
Being a F/A can be very different, depending where you fly. Tell us about you, we'll try to give you directions.
Bye

OK here it goes...
I am 15 years old, Go to KelstonBoys Highschool in Auckland, New Zealand. I love to fly and when ever i do i watch the flight attendants really hard out!! Just to watch what they do. I have found that when at an altitude of 10000 feet they get out of their seats. I don't know what for though. I love to meet other people from different countries. I was born in Rarotonga and live now in Auckland. I can speak Korean, Rarotogan and English fluently. Not that fluently in Korean though. I would like to work for Air NZ. Our national airline. They used to fly to Korea but stopped due to the asian crisis. Is this a bad thing?? Anyway i think i am good at teamwork. I was also wondering how old were you when you became a flight attendant?? Does school matter?? What is the key subject they look at?? What grades do they expect??
PLEASE HELP!!! I need it desperately
Cheers

different airlines have different requirements. Learning languages is helpful. at my airline we don't have a korean route, but I am always running into Korean people along with all other cultures. In school take Speech, foreign language, Geography (no i have never had to use my geography skills, but in an interview it helps to have proof that you are interested in travel).

I traveled alot before I got my job at the airline. I learned after I got the job, that the most important quality they were looking for was a person with good common sense, who could make quick decisions and take charge. Because your for the most part by yourself up at 35,000 feet. They were also looking for adventureous and flexible people.

Last night (thanksgiving eve in the US) I was supposed to spend the night in Miami. I get to Miami at a 11:30pm where they say "no, your going back to NYC" so I get into NYC at 3:30am and they say at 6am we will send you back to Miami. so me and the Captain and the first officer curl up on the EMPTY plane in seats, covered in blankets, freezing in NYC trying to get 2 hours sleep before we leave again.

My point is they want to make sure you can handle stuff like this and not just quit. My own life was just filled with me struggeling on my own to see the world. I told them "hey I can't afford this anymore, I need a steady job so i can travel and work."

Think about why you want to be a flight att and if it is because you want to travel - then travel, if it is because you love airplanes, then learn about planes. tell the interviewer how obsessed you have been with planes. I know it is not because you want to serve soda pop and meals to people. If there is a reason you want to be a flight att then do that now .... its not all about what you learn in school it is about the passion you have in your heart. And also research the airline you apply for.

When they ask you "why do you want to be a flight attendant?" you tell them "I want to be a flight att b/c ..... but I want to be a flight att for your airline because..." and tell them what you like about their airline.

Also I ordered a book of the web called "how to become a flight attendant" it helped me so much. The email address of the flight att who sells it is Skyhigh4u@aol.com

If this doesn't work let me know. she has a web site I just don't remember what it is off hand.

good luck

Dear Mikey

Its good to hear that you are interested in the aviation industry and want to be a Cabin Crew Team Member. There are a few things that you should look at if you wish to pursue a career in aviation.

1.First of all you will need a First Aid Certificate and a Senior one at that. Get it and keep it current.
2.Learn to swim. Sounds silly but it isn't. When you do your Cabin Crew course you will be required to complete a water session where may be required to swin 200m and also tread water in full clothing for ten minutes and another is treading water for 4 minutes whilst keeping a floating passengers (dummy) head above water.
3. Get your Korean up to scratch. Although it might not directly aid you in ANZ, it will show your ability to cope in a multi-cultural environment. Also you can look elsewhere to become an FA as well.
4. Naturally your target airline is ANZ and so it should be since you I assume are a Kiwi resident. Therefore just like a pilot going for a job you need to reasearch the position you are going for. Learn about the airline. Find every aircraft type that ANZ flies and series as well. Find out the routes they normally operate, the seating layout, the aircraft capacity etc.

Whilst this last point may not seem important initially, as an aviation consultant for major airlines its very impressive when an applicant walks in I ask how would you feel about being a FA flying a 14 (??) hours flight from Auckland to Los Angeles or maybe 4 return flights to Australia on a day. For you to be able to respond by saying yes I'd love to be able to be an FA on the 747-400 serving 384 passengers cruising at 44,000ft all the way across the pacific. Or I think that it'd be great to be winging it across the Tasman in a 767-200 with 240 passengers each day - it'd also be good cause the 767-200 also flies to Tahiti etc..

What this goes to indicate is that you are not only interested in the position, but you are also passionate aviation and generally interested in the airline you want to work for.

Hope to hear from you

I will hopefully get my DREAM job as being a FA. I love to work in a team invironment.

mikey

I love new enthusiasm in the airline industry. It's what makes going to work everyday an enjoyable thing. However, not all will agree with me, but it's not as glamourous as it's cracked up to be. I kinda' fell into it. I speak French, English and Italian fluently, and have a university degree, which has absolutely nothing to do with being a flight attendant. Everything you need to know about, the airline will teach you! It's good to get in with a major airline when you're young, 18-19- or 20, if it's a successful airline, you'll be set for life!
