Unfortunatly yes, also grounding 5 aircraft, though they haven't specified whether these will be Boeings or Airbuses or a mixture, as they trim routes back.

I know you will be disappointed Katie, from your other posts, but keep your pecker up Hon, this will affect all the airlines, but lets look forward to the future; business will recover. It may take a while, but historically aviation has peaks and troughs in demand, yes, this looks like a major trough ahead, but don't give up! images/icons/wink.gif

In the past airlines have often tried to 'weather the storm' (nationalised ones in particular)and ended up making tremendous cut backs just as their business is starting to recover. I feel what we are seeing is an attempt at pre-empting the downturn by the major airlines, so helping to keep a handle on the finances.

At the end of the day, we all want to see every airline still flying in a year or so's time. It would be terrible if an airline went bust in the future through not acting now. Although here in the UK most of our airlines make their money on the transatlantic routes, remember that there are other routes in their schedule, such as Hong Kong etc for Virgin.... something we often forget when we think Virgin = LHR/JFK

Due to the recent tragedy in the USA and the after effects I understand that Virgin are laying off 1200 staff?

Virgin Atlantic are going to be laying off approx 1200 staff from all departments.
Approx 600 F/A's will be laid off...the various unions involved are presently in discussion with the company to decide how to choose the unlucky ones to be made redundant,it's either going to be based on an employees performance i.e. sickness, lates etc...or on a last in-first out basis.
5 B747-200's will be retired by 11/01, and 5 routes will be cut they will be LGW-EWR,LGW-YYZ,1 service from LHR-JFK,MAN-MCO & LHR-ATH.
The LGW-MIA & BOS will move to LHR, and the first flight from LHR-LAX will be operated using the A340 instead of the B747-400.
According to the company more cut-backs may follow if the world economic situation deteriorates.

As stated Katie, please don't be disheartened. Things like this occur within the industry from time to time. As J2000 says, things have not been finalised at VS with regards to cabin crew although it seems to me that we are taking the brunt of all this. The worst thing is the waiting. As I'm sure you are all aware, rumours spread like wildfire within airlines and ours seems to have a healthy rumour mill. I hope that we don't lose too many crew, the cumulative experience is huge and would be a severe loss. However, lean times call for a tightening of the belt and sad as it is, difficult decisions must be made. I will find it interesting how many members of management are given their P45/Pink Slip.
I guess the message to any VS crew reading this is that our CC89 reps are and will be douing the very best that they can for us and to sit tight and try (soooo hard) not to worry. Enjoy what you are doing and the people you are with and most of all, remain united.

Rgds.
