I read on another board that the companion passes given to FA's can be quite expensive to use. How does that work? I thought they were free travel with a "small" service fee. How much does it really cost?
I should be going to training sometime in the late summer. Of course, my friends are lining up, assuring me that they are my very best friends.

It's a sliding scale based on mileage. For most flights in the U.S., it's about $.05 per mile. Roundtrip LAX-IAD is about $200.00. But roundtrip IAD-MIA is about $90.00. Sometimes you can get real tickets for close to that, but for last minute travel, it's relatively cheap.

Thanks. That clarifies it for me.

Cam/soon, It is true that you can purchase cheaper tickets but the beauty of companion passes is the flexibility they offer and the 'once in a great while' chance for your friends to sit in business class. For Int'l companion passes it is about 150 usd each way between Europe and the US

Hope you don't mind a NWA FA posting a reply...
At NWA, "buddy" passes cost 10 percent of the highest ticketed fare for that certain destination. For example, I gave a friend a round trip buddy pass for MSY. The highest ticketed fare for MSY for round-trip travel on those days was $1,060. Therefore, $106 was deducted from my paycheck. My guess is that the $1,060 would be the price for a no-advance purchase, non-special, same-day-travel walk-up ticket.
The cost of our buddy passes are automatically deducted from our payroll checks. We are responsible for collecting the fare from our buddies.
NWA gives us eight round-trip buddy passes a year. We do not have to travel with our buddies.
Come visit us sometime at the Redtail Flyers.
Happy motoring!
