United Airlines recalls 1,200 flight attendants
CHICAGO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - UAL Corp.'s (NYSE:UAL - news) United Airlines, the No. 2 U.S. carrier, said on Thursday it is recalling 1,200 furloughed flight attendants to keep up with its increased April flight schedule.
The airline, which earlier this week tentatively agreed to a new contract for 13,000 mechanics and cleaning staff, said the new recalls bring the number of flight attendants back on the payroll since Jan. 31 to 2,000.
United recently announced it was adding 127 flights to its April schedule in certain markets, in keeping with other gradual restoration of some flights industrywide since the Sept. 11 attacks. It plans to furlough fewer pilots as well.
After the attacks, United laid off about 20 percent of its work force, including 2,700 flight attendants.

Welcome back to the 1200 returning flight attendants. We missed you and are happy you will be back flying with us! I must say, your energy and enthusiasm will be welcome.
I have had the opportunity to speak to a few involuntary furloughed flight attendants pass riding on my flights, and it makes me stop and take notice at their unstoppable passion for returning to this career. I am so pleased to have met you during what must have been an incredibly difficult time.
See ya soon!!!

To all our non-United flying "cousins," thank you all for those words of encouragement. Especially at a time when our company, in particular, is enduring the worse period in its 75 year life.
Yes, let's hope the coming years will definitely make up for the last one and this one.

RUMOUR!
I've heard that a good share of the furloughed called back to UA said "No!"
It was also heard that UA is going to start "readying" the training center.

UAL has indeed called back 2,000 involuntary furloughed crews and we have approx 532 still out. UAL on tuesday announced adding a Major chunk of flying out of ORD to compete with AA. Flights will start June 7th. The 2,000 that were recalled were for our enhanced April Schedule so the "REST" of the furloughs will be brought back in June if all goes well. BUT we won't recruit any more crews reason being.......our agreement to offer 2 year voluntary leaves to crews was that if "needed" UAL has the right to cancel the 2 year leaves. UAL will need to give 30 day notice and bring the 2,000 crews who are on Voluntary leave. UAL technically can't recruit any crews as long as OUR OWN crews are on Voluntary or involuntary furloughs. That is my understanding of it. Hope this helps. images/icons/wink.gif
Congratulations to all of the UAL flight attendants coming back from furlough. AA is recalling 413 from furlough, which leaves 750 still out and DL is recalling 500 from voluntary leaves. This is great news for all of us. It seems things are slowly starting to come back!!http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/thumbs.gif
