Shuttle by United was launched in 1994 to compete with Southwest on flights in and out of californina. I remember several advertisements on t.v. that were cartoons. Very amusing. This worked for a while, but point-to-point low yeilding california routes were not the answer.

Shuttle by United became United Shuttle in the year 1999 as United moved to standard product. United Cargo, United Shuttle, United Express and so on. Between 1994 and 1999, United had slowly been moving Shuttle routes as feeder flights into the hubs. San Francisco became north-south heaven for Shuttle flights. SFO featured several destinations including SEA, PDX, MFR, RNO, SLC, LAX, ONT, BUR, SBA, SAN, PHX, and LAS. With several frequencies to many of those destinations, United was running into problems with flow control was in effect.

Los Angeles grew into a meduim sized hub for United with Shuttle. Flights went to OAK, SFO, SJC, SAN, LAS, PHX, TUC, PDX, RNO and so on. Many of these flights have been elimiated or replaced with the regional jet.

The formula of high frequency-low capacity flights turned out to be in-efficient and not profitable. The end was soon near.

The airplane that was selected for the Shuttle by United/United Shuttle mission was the venerable Boeing 737-300 and 737-500. The planes were out fitted with Southwest style galleys featuring the lack of carts. Beverages were loaded on the plane and stored in closets to allow for quick turns. A plane could go four flights with out being serviced with beverages.

The foreward galley featured 6 sliding drawers, one for ice, and others for beverages, liqor and other galley equipment. The back galley featured something very similar to that of the front galley, but in back, there was a mini-fridge and a trash compactor. Beverages were hand run from the galley with each flight attendant covering about 6 or 7 rows on the plane. Cup fulls were used for each passenger unlike mainline were it is standard for the passenger to recieve the full can.

I know several flight attendants that loved working the Shuttle 737s as they had no leavy carts. Some of the lines were really nice, and others were 5 legs a day-4 days a week.

After the september terrorist attacks, United Shuttle became intagraded with United mainline. On the plane, Shuttle service is still preformed, but the brand is gone. The ex Shuttle planes (13XX, 97XX series) have been dispursed around the system flying mainly short hops into SFO, DEN and ORD. For the time, these planes have the Shuttle sinage.

I hope that answers your question. Please feel free to ask anymore.

if anyone else knows anything about shuttle by united please post here.
by the way, why did UA close them. i flew shuttle 5 times over the last 2 years from SFO to LAS and LAX and the flights were pretty full.
i thought the service was very good, with friendly and efficient staff, sometimes better than the MainLine.
does anyone have any shuttle stuff. i was a big fan and would really like anymore info or if you have any stuff i'd luv it.
thanx
