Japanese scientists have found that 30 mililiters of lemon juice in 60 mililiters of water increases blood circulation in the venes by an average of 19 %.
This could help prevent the so called tourist class syndrom (thrombosis).
So what do you docs think about this???

This was published in Men's Health.
According to new Japanese research, drinks with a mixture of electrolytes and carbohydrates work better than water to prevent blood from pooling in your legs and clotting when you fly.
So I guess Gatorade and the other Sport drinks are actually good for something.
Ciao and ....

Tourist Class Syndrome or Thrombosis as you put it is basically known in the medical world as a DVT. Deep Venous Thrombosis. It is caused by what we refer to as Virchow's Triad which is venous stasis, subendothelial collagen exposure, and hypercoagulability. There are also dozens of risk factors such smoking, age, birth control pill use, etc. The major concern that we have with DVTs is to prevent a PE which is a Pulmonary Embolism. PEs occur when the thrombus travels in the venous system back to the heart from the leg and ends up getting stuck in the Pulmonary arteries and obstructs blood flow to the lungs resulting in death.
I think that both of you have interesting points about prevention of DVTs and I would love to read more about your respective articles if you could reference them as to the Medical Journal from which they came. This is a very fascinating subject and is a major concern in the medical field. Infact the pharmaceutical industry spends billions on drugs for this alone.
Bravo to both of you for showing some intellect on this message board and taking an interest in Medical issues.

I've heard taking some aspirin before flight can help too.

More Water!
That is what most people need during long flights. The so called economy class or DOT hype is largely unfounded. In addition, much of the stuff in Men's Health and similar fitness articles are base on junk science.

if the lemon juice thing is true then drinking it should also help prevent varicose veins wouldn't it?

That is very interesting Nixe! Thanks for posting!
I'm wondering whether using calcium channel blockers (I don't use them regularly though) would help prevent DVT, since vasodilation is one of the main cardiovascular effects of this drug.

OK.... I have a pint of hot water with honey and lemon in it, every morning and night. Would the honey negate the positive effects of the lemon??

I would simply drink water, but I realize that's boring when you could be drinking lemon juice. :ooo:

Walking around or during exercises during a flight will help too. Of course, for the FA that's not a problem. :smile_2:
I guess the exercises you get in a high mile club are also a good way to combat the symptoms.
