View Full Version : What's in a name?

Okay, I was hired at US Airways, not USAir. I know the company has yet to paint some of our planes and there isn't a world of difference between "air" and "airways" so maybe I shouldn't complain. But does anyone else get irritated at this all-too-common exchange?

"So you're a flight attendant. Who do you fly for?"
"US Airways."
"Oh, USAir!"

I just think it's a little rude when I just said, "US Airways." Maybe people don't even hear themselves or maybe I'm alone on this. Any opinions?

I know exactly what you mean. I even have a habit of saying USAir instead of being proper and saying US AIRWAYS.

I always loved the name US Air, I really don't like the new name, though I prefer the new colours & logo

I absolutely agree, this tends to happen alot with crews from other airlines. "Who are you guys with?" (our navy is very indistinguishable) "US Airways" "Oh, USAir." Oh are you with Varney Air Lines? Oh you work for Nortwest Orient? Small as the change may be, it is a differnt, and in my opinion, better name. USAir is homely sounding. I guess it's a struggle to get that extra syllablle out. I do wish we'd help the matter along by painting the silver birds.

It's because USAir was around longer then US Airways has been. Everybody on the east still calls it USAir.

Even air traffic controllers call it USAir and that's still your call sign.

Yeah but if someone says "United Airlines..." do you say " Oh United..."? We hate it when Americans say British Air or British!

Actually, we all do call it "United" or "American". I do try to say USAirways, but I still hear employees say USAir in Pittsburg, I still see the brown and orange on things that say USAir and I hear passengers call it that all the time.
I work for NORTHWESTERN Airlines (missed the part about the Big Ten College buying us) so I understand the cringe of someone saying USAir...I feel your pain.

Something else I forgot to mention. USAir Group Inc., is the actual compnay you work for. American is actually AMR and United is actually UAL. So yes I still call it USAir, because that's who I worked for when I was their. I do like the new paint job better then the old one when I was around.

Not to harp on it, Hustler, but it's US Airways Group, Inc. now. Regardless, I still hear agents announcing flights as USAir so I've given up bitching about it. It will probably be Northwest soon anyway. images/icons/wink.gif

Hi everyone. I have to say that I TOTALLY agree with Jetstewus...it's NOT USAir, it's US AirWAYS. When our good ole friend Stephen Wolf arrived, in 1997, one of the first things he did was change our name from USAir to US Airways. The name change became OFFICIAL, Hustler, on February 27, 1997. There were a couple reasons for the name change. For our customers, it made us sound like we were more of a global airline. But for business purposes, USAir hadn't had such a good track record...had a couple crashes in its recent history. So the corporation kind of started anew...new name, new FABULOUS livery, etc.
So yeah, kindly give us the respect we deserve and call us by our rightful name and we'll do the same for you. graemlins/pilot2_smilie.gif

I think that the US Airways name and livery is a lot better than US Air.
It is important that people get used to calling you by your proper name, which is US Airways.
It's like calling Northwest, Northwest Orient, as they were called in the 60s and 70s.
Lots of my former colleagues at swiss airlines and sn brussels airlines, are finding it takes time to get used to calling them by these names instead of sabena and swissair.
It is your name, so people should get used to calling you buy it.
My 2 Scents.

It took NW almost 20 yrs to make people get used to calling us Northwest not Northwest Orient... so expect the same length. It really is hard to change one's habit when the person is so used to it.

Just like "Flight Attendant" .. how people used to call us "Stewardess"... still they do.. and all I usually do is just smile away and they know they made a mistake.
