View Full Version : SFO MEETING
Studley
April 3, 2002, 08:17 PM
Okay....this is your first notice. I'm doing this early enough, so you have more than enough time to get schedules in order.
Mark your calendars for September 7. On that date, we're going to have a meeting in SFO, for everyone who can get there. Another birthday celebration, this one being for chiemseenixe!
Any ideas on where we want to go and what we want to do while we're in SFO will now be entertained. Post here if you're interested in getting together in SFO. I know Nixe is, 'cause she wanted to go there. images/icons/wink.gif
We're still on for NYC on 4/26-4/27. This is just another meeting with enough time for everyone to plan their trips.

April 3, 2002, 08:38 PM
That.... I can request !!!
September 7-th. Noted.
I won't get there till 4 or 5 in the afternoon.
(and with 9 hours time-difference in my legs)
But that sounds like fun.
Nixe is on Market.
(I would be on Kearny.)
So anywhere in the centre would be good.

I was about to post this same topic. :-D Anyways, as a Bay Area Native, I will for sure attend this gathering.

Delayed,
May we draft you to be our local liason? Any other Bay Area natives/residents are also welcome. images/icons/smile.gif
I have never been to SFO, and I would need some guidance on area hotels, restaurants, etc.
Being a former SFO based f/a, I would suggest the Fishermans Wharf area to stay. SFO has a great nightlife and can be very interesting at times!!

Wow, Stud, that was a quick action taken! I'm curious to see whether it will work out!?!
And afterwards we could all go the the DNA Lounge on Geary (it's a club with live music, at least the last time I was there)... Just an idea!

September 7th? Count me in!
And if you have questions about my home town, please feel free to ask!
I'm a 5th generation San Franciscan. My great-great grandfather sailed with his family from the east coast to Panama, trekked across the isthmus, then waited for weeks (during which time his sister succumbed to malaria) for a sailing ship that had 'rounded Cape Horn to take them north to the Territory of California and the tiny settlement of San Francisco.
In 1848 this was a colony of only 459 men, women and children. But gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill and within a decade San Francisco boasted a population of 75,000 - as well as 500 saloons and twice as many gambling dens. Drunkeness and prostitution were rampant!
So you can see; San Francisco was well on it's way to becoming the PERFECT place for a social gathering of flight attendants!

Tja Chiemseenixe ...
my Dash won't make it all the way to SFO, but I know a company which flies there! It's also member of Star Alliance and they seem to hire chiemseenixen images/icons/smile.gif as F/A's! They also give rides to poor DashDrivers especially on SBY tickets! Anyways ... I know SFO very well, as I've spent almost a year over there! We'll see if I can make it.

Where do we want to dine that evening? Do we want to dine that evening? Or should this be left up to the individuals?
I heard about a restaurant named Aqua which sounded pretty good. Local SFO members, what can you tell us? Any alternatives? We would need details on reservations, whether they take groups, and costs, if we choose to go that route.

First of all I was "grounded" years ago and just fly now as a radio/navigator on the last worldwide airworthy Nord 2501 Noratlas.
On the other hand, I am working for AF on a ground position now in our Headquarter.
So if you open your meeting to "ground" staff, I'll note down Sep 07th in my agenda and will try to join.

Though glittering, opulent "Aqua" is certainly one of San Francisco's most glamorous restaurants, STUDLEY, their signature dish (fresh grilled tuna layered with foie gras in a Pinot Noir sauce and a savory black mussel souffle) is almost as costly as a business class ticket to Europe! Aqua is VERY expensive. And very formal.
In my experience, when crews get together and have a few (or more) drinks and dinner, they tend to get, shall we say, RAUCOUS?
I'd suggest somewhere more casual and lighthearted. "Lulu", "Moose's", "Chow", "Mangiafuoco" and "Home" are all spots that could easily accommodate a lively group of flight attendants without missing a beat.
Studley
April 19, 2002, 09:51 PM
RAUCOUS? Really? I didn't know that! images/icons/grin.gif
I had only heard about Aqua, and wanted more information on it. Thanks.
You named quite a few places. Would you supply us with a description of each, please? Will we need reservations for any of these restaurants?
nwacrew,
Remember, the people who are coming to the SFO meeting our Flight Attendants, on a Flight Attendant salary! images/icons/wink.gif
Studley
April 20, 2002, 08:16 AM
How about this for an idea: You can post the descriptions of restaurants here. There will be a final date for posting them. Then, I'll set up a poll in which everyone attending will have a week or so to vote for their desired choice of restaurants.
Here's the kind of information I believe we need in the description, if available:
- Location
- Atmosphere - Quiet, loud, casual and lighthearted (as was mentioned by nwacrew), any music being played there, bar area. Also, whether or not it has a view of the city.
- Will the restaurant take groups?
- Are reservations needed?
- Waiting time before being seated (On average for Saturday)
- Cost of dining there
- Specialty (Thai, French, Italian, Seafood, Spanish, Eclectic, etc.)
- Any recommended or specialty menu items served there
- Alternative menus available (Ex. vegetarian dishes, low-fat, etc.)
- Beverages served (Essentially, whether or not liquor is served there. Do they have signature drinks there that we possibly want to try?)
- Nightlife in the area (So the party can continue after dinner, for those so inclined!)
I believe this is an organized way to figure out where we wish to dine. images/icons/smile.gif
Studley
April 20, 2002, 08:22 AM
I want to point out that the above post is just a suggestion.
An alternative would be to still have the descriptions posted, but use them to decide where we want to dine individually, and then meet up somewhere else after dinner, which is also a good idea.
That way, we won't be locked into one set of options. I know from experience with these kinds of gatherings, that some may not wish to have a dinner as a group. Or they may not like the choice of restaurant, or the cost, etc.

I just received info from my company that not only 24 hour stops, but 2 and 3 day lay-overs will be available to traveler in San Francisco !
Looks like traveler will actually get time to recuperate before going back to work. images/icons/smile.gif
This decision makes traveler very happy.
Guess I'll have to talk to my scheduler again and arrange arrival on the 6-th.
Maybe I can see if I can keep up with Nixe on the way to Tiburon ......

Right on Stud!
You better put "50%" behind my name, cuz although I have a one week vacation at that time, I have to ask my better half(she's also F/A images/icons/grin.gif )if she's willing to go to SFO again (we've just been there and on Maui images/icons/cool.gif on vacation in march). But I might talk her into it, as she liked China Town and the local hair and nail places *hehe*. So I will make my decision rather on a short term base. Nevertheless it would be a lot of fun to get to know all you guys, AND to go to SFO again, but we shall see ...

Ok, STUDLEY, here goes:
"LULU"
816 Folsom Street (near 4th Street)
Warehouse-style interior features dramatic open kitchen with impressive, roaring(!) rotisserie large enough to martyr a hundred saints. Family-style portions of lusty French-Mediterranean food, such as rosemary-scented roasted chicken and steak for two. Can be loud. VERY popular. Cast of thousands (and that's just at the bar!) Reservations essential.
"MOOSE'S"
1652 Stockton Street (Union/Filbert)
One of Herb Caen's favorite hang-outs (If you don't know, don't bother asking) Large front windows look out on Washington Square. A see-and-be-seen crowd, wheeling and dealing over wood-fired gourmet pizzas, simple pastas, grilled salmon, and pork chops. Lively energy. Always jammed. Reservations recommended.
"CHOW"
215 Church Street (at Market)
Bargain-priced, great-food restaurant that embraces Asian, American and Italian cooking. With it's ubiquitous semi-open kitchen, this hot spot bustles with an energetic, diverse (read "gay") crowd. Reservations recommended. You'll wait anyway. They'll page you next door at the popular gay bar; "Pilsner Inn" - if you haven't already met and gone home with somebody...
"MANGIAFUOCO"
1001 Guerrero (at 22nd Street)
Dreamy, carnivalesque Italian eatery with convivial atmosphere and some of San Francisco's most sublime food. A wonderful, magical place for dinner. Fairly expensive. But worth it.
"HOME"
2100 Market Street (at Church Street)
The former "JohnFrank" newly re-opened with less stratospheric prices and therefore jammed nightly with gays and model-types who couldn't afford the previous tariffs. I ate there two nights ago - for the second time in a month - and just as before my friends and I could hardly concentrate on our food with all the gorgeous boys (and girls!) at adjoining tables!
Any of these spots appeal to anyone???

For those of us on budgets(like me)go to www.interliner.com (http://www.interliner.com) or www.dargal.com (http://www.dargal.com) for your hotel rooms.
Or, there's www.priceline.com (http://www.priceline.com) but you have to pay for the room WHEN you book it but I've gotten five star rooms for under a hundred dollars before.
Another thought would be have a list of people who are defeinately going and get a group rate on a hotel. The MORE people the better the deal.
Also, if you are going with a buddy make sure you share a room...even a group of people! images/icons/grin.gif I don't know about you, I doubt I get much sleep!
I checked with our crew scheduling and our crews stay at the Hyatt but there is NO discount it's $200.00 per night! images/icons/mad.gif WAY out of my price range!

I would really like to make it, and I see no problems on me getting there, so put me down, at this time I am at 90% chance of making it images/icons/grin.gif
I'll keep checking the dates, and then just bid my flights around it, and SFO is just 2 hours away. Hope I get to meet most of you images/icons/smile.gif

To nwacrew, wrengeaux, and DXVixen - Outstanding job! This is exactly the kind of information we needed. Thank you very much! images/icons/smile.gif
Any other restaurant recommendations, anyone? I'll leave the nomination period open until next Sunday, then I'll set up a poll so we can vote on where we want to go as a group.

Just a suggestion:
Since it appears to become quite a large group (which is a good thing)
I was thinking that a sit down dinner might not be the most opportune setting for us to mingle.
How about a scenario where we wouldn't have to switch locations during the evening.
A cafe type place with some tables and chairs for talking and maybe ordering nacho's and chicken wings, and either life music or a dance floor in the same place for when we get a bit more courageous. (read drunk).
Anyone know of such a place in the centre of town somewhere ?
I think the atmosphere might be a bit more relaxed if we can walk around, hang, talk to different folks and not worry about dressing up for a good meal. It would also be easier to hang out for a longer time span, since not everybody will show up at the same time I'm sure. That way you could join whenever you please, just ask the bartender about the AirlineCrew people. Off course if the majority wants a real restaurant I will still be there.
Just my two cents.
Give your opinions, please !

That's actually what I'm looking for this time. A location that kind of has all of that in one place.
Although the moving around was an adventure in NYC, I would have preferred to just be in one location.
You're right - if we don't have to move, we'll have a great time. images/icons/smile.gif

I'm just waiting on some more information, then I'll post a poll for where we want to go.
How about just hanging out in the Fishermann's Wharf area? The area has lots of bars, resturants and night spots. Most of the bars and resturants have an outdoor area to mingle!

I can be any where any time,,,but I am just a PAX not a crew,,(unless I am on a RJ where I end up helping pass out blankets) I have really enjoyed trying to understand the issues involving crews. I do fly more than I care to. I also flew in late september just to prove a point.. I do enjoy all the different interst and views of PAX's .... You wont see me posting negative things about my chosen airline ,, nor touting it either , but I just wanted you all to know that I do relate quite a bit , and do enjoy being here. P.s. whom went brain dead and rated me ... LOL ..

One idea for an affordable dinner is "Firewood." It's on 18th street near Castro. It has a classy, cozy atmosphere. You walk up and order what you want from the menu. (Pasta, Chicken, Salads, appetizers, sides, etc. Very tasty!) Then you take a number and they bring it to whatever table you sit at. That way people could order as much or as little as they want and there would be no bill to split or tips to worry about. They usually have several tables liined up next to each other for "family style" seating. Badlands is just across the street and there are a host of other gay bars within easy walking distance. I don't know much about nightlife downtown and am not trying to exclude anyone, but if nothing else this may make a nice, easy excursion. It is right on the subway line, too.
Just a thought. Otherwise, I vote for CHOW. Being "B" scale, I like a place with reasonable prices and a good menu. images/icons/wink.gif

Sorry I have been out of touch. I have been doing 6 day Sydney runs back to back. Well I heard from an FA that you can book rooms under www.priceline.com (http://www.priceline.com) if you put your own bids. He put a bid in for a room near SFO airport accessible to Caltrain direct into the city and he got the Summerfield suites for 50 dollars US a night. The unique part to it is that it was a 2 bedroom (NICEEEEEEE) apartment suite with kitchen and all. Worth it for a crew gathering of the sort we are planning. I was also thinking of maybe a crew picnic on Half Moon bay on the beach. Let me know. - traveler's travel report -
Traveler returns from SFO ..... slightly frustrated.
I got there for a short (24hr) layover late in the afternoon.
The weather was truly lovely so a brief stop with the crew at a bar near the crewhotel was in order after the 10 and a half hour flight.
A local microbrew and chicken cesadilla's on the stoop in the sun later, it was time to split up and explore the fabulous city to one's own liking.
Traveler strolled down Columbus towards fishermen's-wharf to check out some locale's for this planned gathering of us. Hoping to come up with a few detailed suggestions for our main planning dude Studley. This area seemed suggested by many on this site so that's where I went.
Maybe I shouldn't have attempted this mission in the tired state I was in, but I wanted to have a look in the early evening rather than the way early morning for reality observation. (traveler has a 9 hour time difference going here). I strolled from about 6 pm till about 8.
That friday it was still fairly crowded with tourists from all over this globe browsing through the many, many, ...... many (sigh) souvenir shops along the wharf. There are a few real restaurants right there along the strip with large lettering advertising there names. So easy to find. Mainly Italian and seafood. I stuck my head in a couple of them but I really have my doubts about the suitability for us. They are nice looking with mostly small (4 pers.) tables, linen tablecloth and napkins and glassware. I was thinking if the group gets a bit large (which seems likely) this might be too posh and separated for us to meet and mingle and possibly get a bit louder.
Somebody also suggested hotels as an option and just one block away from the water are several. I went inside the Holiday Inn, the Hilton and the Marriott. (there are a few more). The Holiday Inn has an area in the lobby, sorta open and see through from the reception and their restaurant. Space-wise it would do but it didn't have much atmosphere at all. The Hilton and Marriott seemed too chic-ky to me. I think we might get kicked out of these within 30 minutes and wouldn't feel all that comfortable to begin with. (More for the Lincoln towncar crowd).
This left me a bit frustrated, was getting tired from all the walking and still hadn't seen anything that I thought would be really cool.
Right next to the Holiday Inn is a bar called " Bald Abbot ". (on the corner in an old brick building, across the street on the west side of the H.I.). You would enter at street level and go down the stairs. It is a large open place, 2 story high so not bad for non-smokers. It has an oval bar in the middle and plenty space around it with some low and some high tables. They have pool table, darts, pinball, and several other games along the wall. And an old wooden sign outside advertising happy hour and margarita's (this made me smile and think of a few people we're gonna meet). The problem ...... no real food. I didn't think of asking if catering would be allowed.
It was time for me to get some sleep.
During the long walk back along Columbus I saw many familiar very quaint Italian restaurants but they wouldn't do for a group over 10, I think. I did undress but was out before my head hit the pillow.
- the less relevant part -
The next morning I woke at 3 am. Was in the fitness room between 4 and 6. Don't really know how long. Showered and watched a little telly before 7. Then it was 8 all of a sudden, must have dozed off again. Dressed went out in the sunshine. A lot of shops were still closed, had a grilled chicken with lettuce and tomato on wheat and skim milk at this sandwich bar. Walked towards and onto Market Street. Saw that the CD's are not really cheaper anymore than in Europe at the Virgin Mega Store and crossed the street to Nordstrom's. (pretty cool circular escalators). Spend an hour from 9 to 10 in this sunglass place and finally got me some new Revo shades. Thinking I should really become more decisive, but I've enjoyed my other pair for 4 years now so thorough selection has its rewards. Walked, with my new shades on, along Union Square (which they are re-doing at this time) and checked to see if they had anything new in the B&O store. They did not. A quick peek in the banana republic and back to the Hotel .... snoozed for another hour, and then the telephone rang. Time to put the uniform back on.
- end of irrelevant part -
In conclusion: a bit frustrated about my mission (sorry Studley) but happy to walk through that nice city in great weather and happy with my new shades.
- end of traveler's travel report -

Thanks for the try, Trav. I'm going to see what information I can get next weekend. Then, I'll repost the information received so far, with questions for our SFO-based members.
After that, it'll be time for a few polls, plus a few logistical housekeeping matters. images/icons/smile.gif

This has probably been brought up in the past but it bears repeating:
SMOKING is NOT ALLOWED in ANY California restaurants or bars.
Just want to be sure y'all know you'll have to step outside to have a puff. That would be an unpleasant surprise for some people.

Studley,
some of you know that I have a girlfriend flying as well for KLM and that I have 2 kids. This means that we have to adapt our schedules so at least one of us is at home.. But I try to go to SFO on 7 september. I will just go there working, which means that I arrive around 3 pm and will be leaving the next day already. Of course I have to request the flight and since I am a purser, there is only one position, but the flight is not so popular, so....
I am working on it, I will know it 6 weeks before, let's say 50 % but I would love to be there of course!

Hi-Y'all----in the event you are looking for a good spot near the layover hotels downtown..there are some good places we can meet ....there are some decent places not far from union sq. that can be advised of large groups a day in advance. IE: any number of moderetly priced bistros' or using one of the layover hotels and asking for some tables to be set aside for a particular time....this could be done off of union sq. or near the financial district.....then everyone could head off to a local hot spot south of market//in the castro//or union st.///and flash some trolly dolly-attitude......and I agree with our moderator that those on the sight associated with the industry should be included!!!!please come....you just have to let us watch!!!
Paul, is a 50% chance! It's time to roll out the red carpet for the creator!

I also have a few questions about some of them that I will ask to the members who either live or have lived in SFO. You may have to call some of these places to get the answers to my questions.
After all of this, I'll post a few polls, and we'll vote on where we want to go. images/icons/smile.gif

I would say just stand by on the reservation till the final location is known.
There are many, many hotels in town so finding one close to the party (crawling distance) shouldn't be too hard.

I really haven't wanted to restrict the gathering to just the membership.
We could get new members because of this, and it just means more people we could corrupt and be corrupted by while in SFO! images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/wink.gif images/icons/wink.gif images/icons/wink.gif
Also, those crew may be looking to go out while on layover, and why not go out with us?
At the same time, it has to be addressed, since we really don't know how many will bring their crew with them. If everyone brought one or two people, the group numbers could grow into the 100's or higher.
Logistically, to find a place that can handle that size group is a daunting task, indeed.
I'll start a separate thread for tracking this.

Studley!
Please move me from the "definites" to the 50/50 "maybes".
The reason being that my purser group only has about 4-5 departures A MONTH to SFO. At the moment the day of departure is a Wednesday, which means I would leave on the Friday around lunchtime. Maybe for September the departure day will be a Friday or a Saturday, we'll see, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. And then with such few flights there is the problem of seniority... images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Hi Everyone!
Just wanted to say that I am really happy that you will all be meeting in SFO, sounds like it will be a great time.
I also wanted to let you know that one of the original parts of the SFO plan was celebrating Chiemseenixe's birthday. Sadly, due to her flight plan for September she won't be able to attend. I know that way back in April, if you look at the posts from page one of the SFO meeting thread, she was so excited about the SFO meeting that she was trying to imagine what to wear.
Right now she is flying somewhere over the Atlantic and has no idea about this post, and I don't want to embarass her, I just want to wish her a Happy Birthday in advance, and let her know that her friends wish she could be there in September. I know Studley who came up with the idea with her has worked very hard for all this and it's too bad that she won't be there. Thanks for all your time Stud.
Hope that you all have a fantastic time in SFO and once again CN, Happy B'day and hope you have many many more.

Okay Studley,
Add Mrs. Traveler to the next list.
I'm taking her as luggage ! images/icons/smile.gif
She wants to see what strange bunch I hang out with after midnight. images/icons/shocked.gif
( and so do I )
She'll be ... lets say 90 % sure.
She will travel on a non-rev. ticket (space available), but she has connections up front. images/icons/wink.gif

Hey, to those of you coming from a Blue City (a.k.a. where JetBlue Airways flies) remember that currently ALL US F/As can jumpseat aboard our aircraft...we have several new routes, specifially LGB-OAK (starting September 6) if needed to get to SFO. I think I am going to hang out in LAS the night before and hop on over on N7 (VEGAS_FLYER), so let me know, maybe we can all meet up and commute in together.
