Does anybody can say why service seats are so called "Jump Seats" ?

Is it because in the event of an emergency, a crewmember seated there can "jump" out of the seat and proceed to an exit to manage the evacuation process, once the aircraft has stopped?

Well that may apply to Jump Seats located near emergency exits, but how about the one in the cockpit ?
And Jump Seats are normally used by non-rev ....not crewmember, unless instructors or inspectors ....

I thought that the jump seat came from the old two seat aircraft and the early days of parachutes.
Whether it be for fun or for training, to allow parachuting, a seat was strapped to the fuselage, more often than not cross wise, behind the front seats, but allowing access to the door. I guess the jump came from it being a seat to jump from! :pilot_2:

No, I don't. The folding seats for paratroopers in C-47 were called jumb seats. Are the folding seats in cars and truck called jump seats too? I think they are. :confus_2:

I always thought it was like Jetstar says.
But my first aviation job was on a dropzone flying those crazy jumpers up like an elevator boy. :wink_2:
That’s all I heard that summer, jump, jump now, jump run, jump seat, jump altitude, jump-master, jump-plane, and para-this and para-that. (oh, by the way … do you need to eat ? but I didn’t hear that too often !)
They even watched that movie over and over with the song …. exactly … JUMP.

Anyway, it used to be the seat with access to the exit.
Now it’s any of those foldable, non-saleable ones.

Speaking of which....what was the door called on the C-47 that was located in front of the #1 engine? (behind the cockpit on the left hand side.)

The name of the door that opens in front of the #1 engine on the DC3/C47 is called "the hamburger door"!
