Iberia has selected the Airbus A340-600s to replace its fleet of six Boeing 747-200s and plans to place an order for nine of the type.
The carrier says its board of directors this evening approved the purchase of nine A340-600s. Options for an additional three A340-600s will also be included in the transaction.
Iberia has been evaluating proposals from both Airbus and Boeing as part of a long-haul fleet renewal plan. Boeing proposed a mix of 777-200ERs and 777-300ERs.
Iberia says the first three A340-600s will be delivered in 2004, with five to follow in 2005 and the ninth in 2006. The carrier says Airbus has guaranteed the residual value of the aircraft as part of the deal.
An Airbus spokeswoman declined to comment on the Iberia selection and says the manufacturer has not yet booked the order. The A340-600 is only available with the Rolls Royce Trent 556 engines.
Iberia previously said both the A340-600 and 777 met its long-haul widebody requirements and it would make its selection based on which manufacturer offered the best financial package. Iberia has not indicated how much it will spend on the transaction or how it will finance the aircraft.
