Polish carrier LOT is almost to halve commission for travel agents selling tickets for its flights within the Polish market, in a further bid to generate savings at the airline.
It will reduce the commission rate from 1 April, cutting it from 7% to 4%, saying that the action is "in line" with that being taken by other European and US carriers.
"The change is a result of the still-difficult conditions on the air transport market across the world," says the airline. "LOT is taking further action aimed at a significant reduction of the company's operational costs."
Prospective Star Alliance airline LOT has already made a series of cuts, axing staff and reducing services, in order to counter the economic climate after suffering heavy losses in 2001.
LOT regional director for Poland Maciaj Wejroch says: "At the moment LOT has no other choice and the decision to reduce commissions available to agents selling tickets on the Polish market has been necessary to ensure LOT's on-going smooth operations and the company's competitiveness with regards to other carriers."
