Air Canada mainline flew 2.1 per cent fewer revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in January 2003 than in January 2002, according to preliminary traffic figures. Capacity increased by 1.6 per cent, resulting in a load factor of 70.4 per cent, compared to 73.0 per cent in January 2002; a decrease of 2.6 percentage points.
Jazz, Air Canada's regional airline subsidiary, flew 9.9 per cent greater revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in January 2003 than in January 2002, according to preliminary traffic figures. Capacity increased by 2.7 per cent, resulting in a load factor of 53.7 per cent, compared to 50.2 per cent in January 2002; an increase of 3.5 percentage points.
"Our North American traffic results continued to be negatively impacted by increased capacity from low-fare domestic carriers, U.S. regional airlines and from hubs of mainline U.S. carriers", said Rob Peterson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
"While U.S. transborder traffic rose 0.8 per cent at the mainline, the schedule for January also reflected increased transborder flying by our regional carrier, Jazz. On a combined basis, U.S. transborder traffic increased 2.1 per cent on an improved eastern Seaboard and Florida performance partially offset by the suspension of service from Vancouver to Boston and Washington, and a softer California market. Traffic on the China and Japan services continued to expand rapidly and offset the impact of the suspension of our Vancouver-Taipei route," said Mr. Peterson.
This discussion contains certain forward-looking statements, which involve a number of risks and uncertainties. As a result of many factors including acts or potential acts of terrorism, government regulations and government mandated restrictions on operations and pricing, fuel prices, industry restructuring, labour negotiations, the economic environment in general including foreign exchange and interest rates, the airline competitive and pricing environment, industry capacity decisions and new entrants as well as external events, actual results could differ from expected results and the differences could be material.
