I'm curious if Dispatcher pay is poor or ?
What kind of jobs can it lead into besides being a senior dispatcher?
I've had ATC training, will any of this be useful?
thanks

I would have to say that dispatcher pay is not poor, but it is not excellent either.
I have been a dispatcher for 5 years now (3 diff regionals!)and all of them have been pretty close for starting pay. It really depends on where you choose to go. Most of the regionals start anywhere from $10.50 to $14.50hr. Yearly regionals top out around 55k to 70k after about 6yrs.
Again, this is just based on where I have been. I am sure others will chime in to give their estimations too.
As for where it could take you. Other than chief dispatcher, you could possible become Operations Dir/Manager, work your way into dispatch training or take the route of ATC. You might consider becoming a pilot (God forbid!) I don't think that it is limited at all. I plan on going the training route after 2-3 years where I am currently. As for dispatching on a whole. I love it! Hope this helps.

As stated by superguy, dispatching is neither poor nor excellent. Most companies pay well on an average scale but what will get you will be location. Your dollar will either stretch or shrink. But if you love the job it will not matter where you go to much, but it is a concideration. As for going places that will depend on the company you go with and yes atc training can help. Good luck :plane:

sheffield in ft lauderdale fl is good // they provide the training for Delta and KLM and a few other majors. the school was wonderful and you learn alot, but it is hard // if serious start learning weather and the FARS that will help alot :pilot_2:

I agree. Sheffield is where I attended and it was worth every penny! There is no doubt that you will earn your license when you graduate. It is not an easy course and if your get behind, forget about it.
Just go into it knowing that for 6 weeks you are going to eat, sleep and breath aviation/dispatch.
I know that there are other schools and I am sure that they do a fine job, I am just biased to Sheffield.
Good luck!

I was looking at the website but I wasn't sure....
So I suppose this might be something like tech school in the military? 24/7 it was learning all kinds of FARS
.....
Thank you so much for help!

I work for a major airline & good news dispatcher pay is good. The bad news we have dispatchers on layoff. A dispatcher job with my airline is for life. Low seniority is probably 23 years.
To work for the regionals I think the pay is not good. I make more in fleet service than they do in dispatch. Kinda sad.
PS: I have my dispatchers license.

I can't say dispatcher pay is good but it depends on WHERE you go.
I started here at QX making $10.30 per hour. Now that we have a new contract, entry level pay is $12.00 per hour.
I know cargo carriers pay more. I have a friend who is a new hire for one of the cargo carriers (read: supplemental) and he makes 45-50K per year but has very little benefits.
As for WHERE you can go from a dispatch position? Most of the "turn-over" in this department moves into administrative positions...hence desk jobs....8am to 5pm M-F.(B-O-R-I-N-G)
I have been fortunate however, the company for which I work has grown soooooo much that we have more than doubled our staff since I have been here. That means that I can actually bid weekends off! (The down side of that is, traveling on the weekends suck!)
One thing that no one has mentioned is the fact that dispatchers hold airman's certificates. With that, we are allowed to jumpseat. Meaning that there is usually an extra seat onboard that we are qualified to occupy! One of the very nice perks we have.
